Surge Battery Metals Inc. (OTCQX: NILIF) announced that drilling has commenced at its Nevada North Lithium Project. The company stated that the 2026/27 drill program is designed to upgrade mineral resources and provide essential data for a future bankable feasibility study. The project is held through a joint venture entity called Nevada North Lithium, LLC, which is formed by Surge and Evolution Mining Limited.
According to the company, the drilling operations began after the joint venture received approval from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management under the 2025 Exploration Plan of Operations Permit. The company said crews were mobilized and drilling is expected to continue through the fall and into the 2027 drill season. The program utilizes diamond core, sonic, and reverse circulation drilling methods to serve specific engineering purposes.
The 2026/27 program includes up to 25 core holes totaling approximately 15,000 feet and up to 20 sonic holes totaling approximately 5,000 feet. These holes are intended for condemnation and pit definition drilling. The company noted that this work will test areas planned for waste rock storage, plant infrastructure, and access and haul road corridors. The drilling will also refine the ultimate pit boundary for mine plan optimization. An allowance of up to 10 reverse circulation holes, approximately 5,000 feet total, is included for rapid confirmation drilling and the installation of vibrating wire piezometers.
Surge Battery Metals Inc. also plans to drill two aquifer test wells, each twinned with a vibrating wire piezometer monitoring hole, to characterize the aquifer system. A separate water supply well will support field operations and will also be twinned with a vibrating wire piezometer to monitor aquifer response during pumping. The company stated that core will be logged, sampled, and tested for geotechnical characterization to support pit slope, foundation, and infrastructure design. Representative bulk tonnage material will be sampled to support flowsheet optimization and a pilot program ahead of the bankable feasibility study.
The company cited an updated mineral resource estimate dated June 30, 2026, which reports a pit-constrained Measured and Indicated Resource of 657.5 million tonnes grading 3,007 parts per million lithium. This resource contains 10.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent at a cutoff grade of 1,250 parts per million lithium.
Key terms
Bankable Feasibility Study: A comprehensive engineering and economic analysis of a mining project that provides the detailed data required by lenders and investors to make a final investment decision. It typically includes detailed cost estimates, production schedules, and financial projections.
Measured and Indicated Resource: Categories of mineral resources that are classified based on the level of geological confidence. Measured resources have a high level of confidence, while indicated resources have a moderate level of confidence. Both are considered to be economically mineable in at least one scenario.
Lithium Carbonate Equivalent: A standard metric used in the lithium industry to express the total lithium content in a resource or reserve, allowing for comparison between different lithium compounds and ore grades.
Vibrating Wire Piezometer: A geotechnical instrument used to measure pore water pressure in soil or rock. It is commonly used in mining and construction to monitor groundwater levels and stability during drilling and excavation.
Why it matters
Drilling programs at this stage are critical for converting inferred mineral resources into measured and indicated resources, which increases the geological confidence in the deposit. The data collected from core, sonic, and reverse circulation drilling helps define the geometry and grade of the ore body. This information is necessary to optimize the mine plan and determine the ultimate pit boundary.
Hydrogeological testing and geotechnical data collection are essential for designing safe and efficient mining operations. Understanding the aquifer system and rock properties allows engineers to plan for water management and infrastructure stability. Bulk metallurgical sampling provides data on how the ore will process, which influences the design of the processing plant and the expected recovery rates.
The bankable feasibility study is a major milestone for mining projects. It transforms geological and engineering data into a financial model that can be used to secure financing. The study evaluates the technical and economic viability of the project under various scenarios. Completion of the feasibility study does not guarantee that the project will proceed to construction, as it depends on market conditions, financing availability, and regulatory approvals.
What to watch
The documents state that drilling is expected to continue through the fall and into the 2027 drill season. The company said the program will provide data needed for the next stage of development, the bankable feasibility study. The documents reviewed do not give a timetable for the completion of the feasibility study.
